Does Your HVAC Unit Need End of Summer Maintenance?

Preparing Your System for Winter the Correct Way

You have your HVAC system tuned-up in the spring and fall, but that does not mean it will not require additional maintenance after working hard all summer long. In fact, now is the prime time to service your home’s heating and cooling.

Your home will soon transition from the cooling season to the heating season, so you can prep the furnace and then tackle any undone air conditioner maintenance before the transition occurs.

Here are the must-do HVAC maintenance tasks at the end of summer:

  • Start Using Ceiling Fans: At this time of the year, temperatures are cool enough outside that your home does not need the air conditioner running continuously. Instead, utilize your home’s ceiling fan systems to circulate air, crack the windows open to freshen things up, and give your air conditioner a much-needed break.
  • Clear Debris Away: Look at the condenser unit outside. With all the lawn mowing and wind in the summer, debris tends to pick up and find its way to your exterior unit. This buildup severely restricts airflow; therefore, you must clean it away either with a brush or vacuum to restore the airflow.
  • Change Your Filter: Ideally, you should change your air filter monthly. Even with a larger air filter that does not require monthly changes, check it each month to see how dirty it has become. Summer is one of the seasons when more dirt tends to accumulate; therefore, you might still need to replace your filter monthly.
  • Schedule Preventative Maintenance: With summer ending, now is the time to call in the professionals for an end-of-season and pre-season tune-up. After all, winter will be here before you know it, and you want to ensure your furnace is ready to tackle the job.
